Why Today’s Inauguration Day is So Important to Our Future Healing

I couldn’t sleep last night. Like many of you have experienced, the past few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster. As a physical empath, I have noticed strange pains in my knees and legs that have not been their before. I am sensitive to the emotional energy of the collective as well as the emotional waves of my own inner being. It always takes me time in my practice to assess what is going on with my mind, body and emotional state. …

We Believe Therapy Fixes All When it’s Just the Beginning of a Journey

As a licensed psychologist with an APA accredited internship and a CV of top clinical training, I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to watch my clients suffer simply because they have been told that psychotherapy is the cure all for their symptoms. As a psychologist, I have extended my training for years and explored other healing modalities (yoga, meditation, energy psychology, reiki etc…), consider various alternative health practitioners colleagues and have a very open view on religion and spirituality and why the soul is important to our health and well-being. My own journey as a highly intuitive person has led me to believe that those of us who suffer the most are likely empaths who need energetic training and not just a place to talk about what is going on. …

Spirituality Has its Light and Dark Side For a Reason

I just returned to the United States and am only now exiting much of the isolation I experienced in 2020 due to an up leveling of my healing journey and keeping myself, as well as my family, safe during this pandemic. As I made my transition to a new city in December 2020, I quarantined in a large home and yoga wellness center before making the decision to come back to the United States. I was not prepared for what I would encounter. As an American who has largely walked her spiritual path on her own and through yoga, I am used to the lightworkers and the need to maintain our vibration as healers so that we can be of service to others. …

I am not sure who really thought it was a good idea to work as hard as we do and be as frustrated as we are. If this pandemic has pointed out to so many of us, the way in which we approach our professional lives is not a good long term strategy. We are feeling the continued effects of exhaustion which has now been compounded by Zoom exhaustion and fear for the future.

What went wrong? Well, we have been on the path of working with our masculine energy for a long time. This is the energy assertive, direct, and action focused. It is the energy we associate with being successful. Yet, as things continue to come undone or we begin to awaken to the realities that so many of our structures are not meant to be taken into the future, we cannot use this same energy to create change. …

Happy New Moon everyone! If you have not done so already, taking time to do some intention setting for the next 30 days is a nourishing act of self-care. We are starting a New Year and it is difficult. Yesterday, I caught a glimpse of a CNN correspondent crying as she was covering the COVID-19 pandemic. She reminded us, that while she was a journalist, she was also a human being. We forget that we are humans with a biological drive to seek reassurance. Up until this point in history, we have been wired to seek reassurance from our friends, family, and, yes, our government. We seek reassurance from our doctors, mental health professionals and others we deem as having the expertise to give advice. As this pandemic continues, however, we are being asked to cultivate our own reassurance. …

Many of us don’t realize that we are on a journey. It can be an internal journey or a physical journey. For many of us these days, it is both. The biggest roadblock to allowing the journey to flow is our fear of our emotions and the healing of trauma — from either this life or previous lives. It is not our fault. Psychology decades ago, when we were collectively going through an earlier time of awakening, believed in depth psychology or the psychology associated with healing our unconscious beliefs that were hindering our life. Then, like it always does, things shifted and psychology became obsessed with being considered just as medical and scientific as surgery and we lost the heart of the profession. This led us to focus solely on healing the mind at the exclusion of the body and the soul. Cognitive Behavior Therapy has become the only treatment option available to you if you happen to try to go to therapy via your insurance plan in the United States. …

And it is not going to be cute for all empaths

There is a little bit of a misunderstanding of what it means to be an empath. An empath, originally popularized by Dr. Judith Orloff, does not mean one is just sensitive to others. It means that they have healing gifts. An emotional empath will pick up on the thoughts and emotions of other people and experience them in their own body. A physical empath will pick on the physical pains of others and take that into their own body. A food empath is sensitive to the energy of food. Because of our confusion, we have now equated being an empath versus being emotionally centered as a dichotomay of “good” versus “bad” or, even worse, “awakened” versus “unawakened.” There is no such thing and it misses the point of these sensitivities as gifts that are eventually meant to serve the community. For centuries we have created a culture that is scared of emotions because we do not know how to process emotional energy in healthy ways. We have taught empaths for far too long to simple avoid the emotions of others rather than see the emotion as energy that can be dealt with safely and effectively (we need an empath school of magic). …

Our hearts are broken and this will be the start to massive change.

Today a friend sent me a hilarious video of what 2020 looks like if they were your ex boyfriend. It brought a dose of humor and validation to how difficult this year has been for all of us. My clients have been caught in cycles of frustration and pain with their spouses only to realize that their arguments are not really about scheduling family zoom sessions — it is about the disappointment, grief, and over all heartbreak that we missed a year of our lives.

Early in the pandemic, I started recommending that my clients pause on dating and work on themselves. Naturally we all thought that this would be a three month break. Some of them did some inner work and returned to online dating over the summer. Others felt the panic of the loneliness set in and used online dating as a distraction. Still others used this time for spirituality and healing and focused on supporting Black Lives Matter. The net result for many people has, however, been the same. Our hearts are either hurting from our personal lives and/or from witnessing the destruction of the community that was built earlier this year. …

Blue Lace Agate always intrigues me. It reminds me of the throat chakra, our center for communication and self expression. Yet, its healing properties are also tied to our heart. It makes sense. Our emotions (which sit in our sacral chakra) are very much tied to our throat. We can see this every day in our arguments with each other over who should wear a mask, whether you are an idiot for not wearing a mask or arguing over our freedom being taken away. The Universe has officially entered its teenage years and we certainly did not prepare for this developmental transition very well. …

Contribute to Garnet + Fire, a publication looking to heal toxic insecurity and relational trauma through both the science of psychology and the wisdom of ancient spiritual traditions. We know from relationship science that trauma, bad breakups and divorce all cause us to fear relationships. Too many of us are walking around with full blown PTSD from either our childhood relationships or a bad breakup as an adult! What we are learning, however, is that we have been trying to heal our relationship problems in isolation of spirituality. We need both science and spirituality to fully heal. To this end, Garnet + Fire supports the idea of relational spirituality where we learn to use all our relationships as fuel to further our spiritual learning. …
