As both a licensed psychologist with high levels of scientific training AND an advanced intuitive — I haven’t got a clue what you are referring to when you use the word “psychic.” It is being used out of context and diminishes a powerful skillset that many people have and do not always use. There are lots of people who seem to “know” things without knowing how they know them. There are empaths who pick up on the energy of others. And there are mental health professionals who use their intuition to help clients take a look at their subconscious in an effort to help them heal. Implying that “psychic” is bad or that spirituality and intuition is a waste of time does not honor the individual path most people have to walk in order to find the happiness they want in their individuals lives.
I spend my career working with sensitive people who discount other data they collect simply because they logically and scientifically can’t figure out why they know things. Then the read articles like this. They call themselves crazy, believe they have incurable anxiety/depression, and live in a place of little hope. There are people suffering simply because they have been told (through articles like this) that their intuition is a waste of time rather than supported in experimenting with the best way to incorporate it in their life. Articles like this often do more harm than good to sensitive people struggling with their journey into who they really are. Intuitive guidance CAN be a wonderful intervention to deal with the self-doubt. These people are bravely looking at the way they see things and KNOW that there is more to learn. Let’s stop the simplistic labeling and just support people doing their self study work in whatever way they wish to do the work — even if that means they believe they have “psychic thinking” OR believe that psychics are out of their minds. There is always something to learn and no one way to learn it.
“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” — Carl Jung
Cognitive distortions refer to a fixed mindset and are used to describe the behavior in clients that have little access to the intuitive side of life. They are unwilling or unable to do the deeper work to access their intuition and re-connect the mind-body-soul. Their treatment plan is a heck of a lot different than a client who may be misunderstanding their emotions and/or their intuitive thoughts. I have no idea how you’ve connected “psychic” with cognition but the pathologizing is usually not helpful to anyone, let alone people struggling with anxiety and depression who tend to have heightened abilities to pick up on emotions and energy.
If, however, you are talking about spiritual bypassing via the use of crystal talk and the lack of discipline in doing the personal growth work — that would probably be a great article to research and would make more sense.
