Healing Sexual Repression

It goes back to your childhood

I recently had a phone call with a friend and colleague where she stated that someone she respected and admired in the business world gave the advice to never do business with someone that seemed sexually repressed. To a certain extent I can understand that mentality. Sexual repression usually has anxiety and other emotional symptoms associated with it. Yet, if one were to really stick with this rule, half the world would be dropped from potential client status. Why? Sexual repression almost always has a traumatic memory linked to it.

From a yogic perspective, our sexuality and desires are associated with the sacral chakra. It rests in our hip area and develops between the ages of 8–14. Assuming we had a healthy childhood in the first seven years of life, we should naturally transition to this stage of development with joy and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, many children do not have wonderful life experiences at this age and it is only up until recently that we are even interested in discussing emotional health. Without a solid foundation in creative exploration, most children are set onto a path of having repressed sexual and creative desires as young adults.

We also then institute a bunch of control over children’s bodies and their lives. We condition them to fit into a cultural mold and then do not teach them anything about relationships, emotions or intimacy. The ages of 8–14 should simply be about JOY and creativity. Yet, how many of us can really remember those moments of joy at such a young age? Perhaps a few of us are capable of truly remembering those happy and positive moments but the majority of us focus on the negative rather than the positive.

Fast forward to adult years and we find ourselves going one of two ways: We become overly active in the sacral area which can lead to addictions and other unhealthy behaviors OR we find ourselves overly emotional and lacking sexual desire. Both situations are caused by an imbalance in the sacral chakra. It is an energetic imbalance that can be fixed with the right knowledge of energetic tools to help with the rebalancing of energies.
